Top 20 MC'S

rap gods
My list is based on MY OPINION, and remember I have been following the game since the late 70's, Truth if i based my list on the original rules. (BATTLES! CIPHERS, and STREET CRED amongst peers) This would be a whole different LIST! If cats are afraid to battle, how can we really test skills? it sucks that all elements still battle, yet rappers cop out from real face to face confrontations. We have more Rap Fights, than actual battles… smprh
People will look at this list and say. Why so many NYC heads?
My reply…YUP!
I don't have to argue where Hip Hop Came from. the Bronx. And NYC put in tooo much work, set the bar high since the 80's. Not to mention. Controlled the ears of the world from Zulu to Wu.
I will update this list once a year, so stay Tuned.
20- MC LYTE: Lyte as a rock put her in the top tier. But every single one of her songs made TOP Rappers Re think how they approach a song. Sound hard, Stay Raw like her. She embodied what a real NYC Rapper should sound like at all times. Females get dissed on toooo many lists! Real truth.
18- BIG L:
What place in history would he be in, if he wasn't taken so young. Rest Well Legend.
18- ICE CUBE:
WEST COAST HAS A GOAT. And it is ICE CUBE. probably the most respected West Coast rapper in the rap game, as far as consistent rap skills in every album.
17- RED MAN:
He was so comedic in his approach, his punch lines left him in the dark on allot of rap lists. ALL TIME GREAT! period dot!
16- LAUREN HILL:
She should have gone further in her RAP career. Singing took precedence. Still one the greatest lyricists I ever heard in my Hip Hop life.
15- GZA:
Can be ranked even higher. he is the most slept on rapper of ll time. Maybe because he does not have the personality of an LL…. Still, he made my list….. nuff said.
14- BIG PUN:
Proud to be from the same hood. BX PR stand up! He came off harder than any other rapper of his time. Puerto Ricans don't hold Back!
13- KOOL G RAP:
will be considered top ten in many lists, and rightly so. Hard as F&ck! The Lisp was iconic. Rhymes were straight NYC classic.
12- BLACK THOUGHT:
Can't see him lesser that Top 20 of all time. That is major for Philly. He is one of the greatest, And he isn't finished yet.
11- SLICK RICK:
I will get hated on for not putting him top ten, i understand. Tough choices had to be made. Greatest Story Teller.
10- EMINEM:
I put Pharoe in front of him. I am sure he will agree. Battle tested, and Certified. Leave that brother alone!
9- PHAROE MONCH:
Never understood why cats over look him. We go back like 8 tracks. He is straight Top 10 material.
8- NAS:
DEF top tier, and gets more props than any other rapper on this list, Nuff said.
7- KOOL MOE D:
He did it all before anyone knew wtf battle and lyricism, solo artists with ghetto hits was.
6- BIGGIE SMALLS:
His round with Tupac, And his rhyming at a block party clip won me over. Not to mention, some of the most classic Rap Tracks in history, that still bang in the hood. RIP Legend.
5- GRAND MASTER CAZ:
Should be higher, but sensitive a$$ mufuckas out there, would be like , why all Bronx? why all OG's. F&ck yall! He set the bar HIGH, and got people biting his style till this day. TILL THIS DAY!
4- BIG DADDY KANE: Tested and had some of the hardest Lyrics in the game. With amazing Flow.
3- RAKIM: Put him here strictly for the love of Hip Hop lyricism, I don't know of any battles, But he is a master.
2- MELLE MEL:
Was already rocking lyrical skills, word play and had the illest Cadence, And he Out the skills to the test!

DJ Kool Herc is the Official Father of Hip Hop Culture. His music selection, and connection to the BBOY/BGIRL Community, as well as his overwhelming presence on the streets created a huge following that lead to all the manifestations of what Hip Hop is today.

The official year is 1973, the year that DJ Kool Herc had a famous party for his sister, and where he started playing his trademark style of Bboy Music, and how he played his music set off the scene that sparked the flames for what today's Hip Hop represents.

DJ (that cuts break beats), MC (rapper), BBOY/BGIRL (breaking is the original Hip Hop Dance), WRITER (original term for graffiti writer), KNOWLEDGE (of Hip Hop History, of self, Other people, cultures, and the world around you)
the basic elements of Hip Hop Dance are: from NYC we have Breaking, Rocking, Party Dance/Freestyle, Electric Boogie. and from the West Coast influence we also include POPPING, and LOCKING.
Many will say it is BREAKING, POPPING, and LOCKING. Due the popularity of early Hip Hop Movies like BEAT STREET, and BREAKIN. But the real truth would be: BREAKING, ROCKING, and FREESTYLE/PARTY DANCE
YES, HIP HOP DANCE, is an extreme physical, and cardio workout, and also a fund dance. Even if you do basics in any of the styles of Hip Hop, we believe you would receive great benefits in your health.
First make sure you love the music. if you are a fan of real Hip Hop Music (Break Beats & Rhymes, Rap, Electro Funk). First thing any Hip Hop beginner should learn is simple Groove, and 2 Steps. Even for Breaking. Having a good sense of rhythm will take you far in any style of Hip Hop. Make sure you take classes with a reputable studio that teaches foundations in all Hip Hop dance styles.
The traditional way to get your name in Hip Hop Dance, is when your teacher, or someone influential gives you a name. You want a name with meaning, that represents your dance, and someone who has been there through out your journey who you respect, is the best person to give you a name. Other wise, some people choose a name based on his or her movement, add the word BOOGIE and your Initials, Start with MR, or MRS and add a funky move like MR WIGGLES ;), Use your CITY and add your initials. Try starting with a 3 letter word taken from your first or last name, or do like POP MASTER FABEL and open a dictionary, cover your eyes, flick the pages, and point at a random word (true story), then change the spelling of the word to give the name a twist.
If You dedicate yourself to studying basics without getting ahead of yourself, keeping up with social style dance 2 steps, and grooves, learn short 4 count freestyles, and build up to 8 count, 16 count, 32 count freestyles, and battle in open ciphers with other students, you will get good fast. But it takes a patient mindset to study foundation without getting anxious to grow. You are good once you can combine rhythm, groove, steps, and moves with confidence.
